Energy for a better tomorrow

Compressed Natural Gas

CNG is Compressed Natural Gas, a clean fuel for automobiles. Natural Gas is compressed & dispensed to vehicles at high pressure of 200 bar to enhance the vehicle on board storage capacity. CNG is environment friendly since emission of CO, NOx and particulate matter is very less. It's been a successful fuel for the transport system, popularly termed as "GREEN FUEL". Its economical as compared to liquid auto fuels. CNG improves engine performance and provides a better mileage. Its non-toxic, non-corrosive, non-carcinogenic nature gives engine an extended life and also contributes to a less polluted environment.

Conversion to CNG

Standard CNG kits are available in the market which can be fitted into any three/four wheeler. The basic components of a CNG kit are storage cylinder, high pressure tube pressure regulator, pressure gauge, change over switch, high pressure tube/fittings, CNG level indicator and air fuel mixer.

Advantages of CNG

CNG improves engine performance and provides a better mileage. Its non-toxic, non-corrosive, non-carcinogenic nature gives engine an extended life and also contributes to a less polluted environment.

  • Cost effective. Cheaper than conventional fuels. Short pay-back period (3-4 years).
  • Longer engine life. CNG does not affect engine/crank case oil. Gives the engine a longer life.
  • Low pollution. Low levels of pollutants, no smell of exhaust.
  • High Safety. Natural Gas being lighter than air, there is little possibility of dangerous fire. Very safe since CNG cylinders are structurally sound and goes through rigorous testing. In case of a rare leakage its unlikely to ignite due to high ignition temperature and narrow range of ignition.

Using natural gas can reduce the impact on the environment

Each of us can make a difference and when it comes to energy, people and communities worldwide are eager to transition to smarter, better energy choices. Natural gas is a key part of that transition and can help ease the way.

CNG is more environment friendly

CNG engines run more quietly due to the higher octane rating of CNG over gasoline and they produce less exhaust emissions. Harmful emissions such as carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2 and nitrous oxide (N2O) can be reduced by as much as 95% when compared to gasoline powered vehicles.

CNG reduces maintenance costs

CNG contains no additives and burns cleanly leaving no by-products of combustion to contaminate your spark plugs and engine oil. CNG is almost two third the price of super gasoline, resulting in substantial savings in fuel costs.

CNG is safer

CNG is lighter than air, hence in case of leakage CNG disperses quickly into the air instead of on the ground, reducing the risk of fire and ground contamination.

Do's & Don'ts

  • Switch off engine while fuel filling.
  • Apply Hand Brakes while fuel filling.
  • Get the CNG cylinder checked every three (3) years from the date of last testing / retesting of cylinder by government authorized CNG cylinder testing agency.
  • Ensure installation/servicing of the CNG kit is done by authorized workshop.
  • Always keep the certificate of the CNG kit and the cylinder.
  • Always keep a portable fire extinguisher and a First Aid kit in the vehicle.
  • LPG, propane or any other cylinder should not be used instead of a CNG cylinder.
  • Do not start engine or board the vehicle while fuel filling.
  • Avoid carrying inflammable material near the CNG cylinder.
  • Never fill any gas other than CNG.
  • Do not place any luggage or load over cylinder as it may damage the cylinder pipe, hose, valve etc.
  • The CNG cylinder should not be repaired under any circumstances, in case of any problem, consult with authorized workshop.

Frequently asked questions

Is CNG a safe gas?
Yes, it is absolutely safe as a gas. Being lighter than air, in case of a leak it rises up and disperses into the atmosphere. This property precisely makes it a safe fuel.
What is the cost of conversion from petrol to CNG?
The conversion cost depends upon the type and make of the automobile and the conversion kit. Roughly the cost varies between Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 50,000.
Can I run my automobile on Petrol once the CNG in my fuel tank gets consumed?
Yes. You are provided with a switch on the dashboard of your car. So once you flip the switch, you can make the car operational on petrol or CNG alternatively.
What is the capacity of the CNG cylinder, and mileage from one fill?
The tank which has a storage capacity of 60 water liters can store up to 8 to 10 kilograms of CNG. A mid-sized car of about 1200cc can run up to 175 kms to 200 kms in one filling.
How do I get to know the quantity of CNG left in my cylinder?
An electronic fuel management system is installed as part of the CNG conversion kit in your vehicle on the dashboard. This system will show you the CNG levels in your vehicle.
Does CNG have any harmful effects on my car engine?
No. CNG does not have any known harmful effects on your vehicle. The absence of any lead content in CNG helps avoid lead fouling of plugs, thus enhancing plug life. Upon entering the engine in the form of a gas, CNG doesn't disturb the presence of lubricating oil in the engine, and reduces chances of wear and tear. Further, it does not contaminate or dilute crankcase oil, giving a new lease of life to the engine.
Can a diesel vehicle be converted to CNG?
Under the latest technology, a diesel car cannot run on dual fuel mode. A diesel vehicle can be converted to run on CNG, but the conversion cost is higher than the conversion of petrol vehicles.
How does a large-scale usage of CNG benefit my country?
As compared to alternative fuel, CNG emits lesser amount of Carbon dioxide and other pollutants. This helps to reduce the pollution & health related problems caused by automobile pollutants. Further, due to its low price as compared to its alternative fuel, with improved mileage, it helps to save more money. With the emergence of new sector i.e. Natural Gas, it has generated more opportunities in business as well as in terms of employment. Thus large-scale usage of CNG not only reduces pollution, but also helps development indirectly within the nation.
